About the Artwork
'Dark Waters' explores a state of loss and turmoil, the sea scape acting as a metaphor for the unknown. The painting depicts a raw, fin-like tongue, wading in an uncanny space that elides the internal and external. Thick, rough teeth or iceberg-like forms sit on the horizon, acting as a threshold to a bleeding sky. The raw figure appears both fragile and resilient, both victim and architect of its own fate. It floats on mottled waters, dotted in tiny red splatters - a subtle suggestion of violence. The playful aesthetic points at the tragicomic of living in a body. The tensions between beauty and horror are negotiated in an attempt to achieve a charged sensory encounter.
