About the Artwork
Drawing on the parallels between the processes of painting and photography and our relationship to the unstable photographic image, my work explores ideas around our fragile anchorage on the past and present, meaning and absence, fragmentation and erasure. I'm interested in the increasingly elusive notion of a whole, of seeing the complete picture, and the idea that we are only ever dealing with fragments, traces, disconnections and gaps, echoing the dislocated nature of recollection.
'Sleep' is from a series of paintings based on fragmented and reassembled photographs of curtains and wallpaper, domestic coverings that act as form of veil or screening to what is beyond view. The 2 grainy and faded elements in the painting attempt to hold together, a collision of disparate parts glitching, connecting and disconnecting, glimpses of transformation or new meaning slipping in and out of view, what Blanchot described as 'unrevealed yet manifest'.
