About the Artwork

This piece is from my ‘Royal Park Life’ collection and is inspired by the woodpeckers seen in Bushy Park. I began with a pencil drawing on paper, which was then printed onto a cotton-silk fabric. I hand embroidered the birds with fine, vibrant threads to bring them to life, while intentionally leaving the surrounding tree in monochrome. This contrast highlights the presence and character of the woodpeckers, reflecting their energy and vividness within the stillness of their natural environment.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Susannah Weiland (b. 1977) is a fine art hand embroidery artist. She studied Graphic Design at Nottingham Trent University. Her distinctive style combines tonal pencil drawing with delicate hand embroidery. She was awarded a prestigious QEST Scholarship to study at the Royal School of Needlework. Weiland has been recognized as the winner of the Chiswick House & Gardens Wildlife Art Competition. Her work has been exhibited internationally at ICFF in New York and featured in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition.
