About the Artwork

The drawing ‘The Cloud’ portrays natural spirits and reflects my idea of animism, which is based on a feeling of coexistence and emotional intimacy between natural phenomenon and human beings. I have been working on the theme of animism and exploring how we can share a feeling of respecting nature in modern life as our ancestors did. In this work, I depicted the sky and trees with gentle textures and gradations that emphasize the character of the cloud. The expression came from my sensibility and observation of the form of the cloud.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Chiho Iwase (b. 1981) is a BA Fine Art graduate from Chelsea College of Arts. She was shortlisted for the Barbican Arts Group Trust ‘ArtWorks Open’ (2024/2021/2020) and the Derwent Art Prize (2022). She won the Jackson's Art Prize Watercolour Award in 2025. Her work has been exhibited at numerous galleries in London, Paris, and Tokyo. She undertook a residency at Arteles, Finland, in 2019.
