About the Artwork

"Rise of the Tidal Ice Queens" is a laboriously produced, multiblock, water-based Japanese woodcut, printed on both sides of thin Awagami Kozo Select Murakumo Inkjet Paper. The work emerged from an artist residency at Moskosel Creative Lab in Lapland, Sweden. During this time, I researched Sami traditions at the Ãjtte Museum in Jokkmokk, 3D-scanned northern landscapes, and recorded 360-degree footage of the Aurora Borealis. These elements were used to construct an immersive virtual world of ice, snow, and aurora-lit skies.

The print merges imagery of the winter forest with hand-carved avatars that originated in a VR experience. By physically cutting wood and printing multiple layers with water-based pigments, I intentionally expose the gaps within digital visual culture – particularly its lack of tactility and embodied emotion. I believe the boundary between analogue and digital can be seamless, and that working across both can produce new forms that more honestly reflect our contemporary world.
