About the Artwork
The term ‘monad’ comes from the Ancient Greek words ‘monas’, meaning unity and ‘monos’, meaning alone. It was originally conceived by the Pythagoreans, to simultaneously denote the first thing to come into existence, the totality of things, and the supreme being. The use of salvaged media references the cyclical repurposing of energy and matter in ecological as well as cosmological systems, where one ‘identity’ is broken down and reconfigured into new ones. The use of carbon neutral media with materials that sequester carbon dioxide results in a net carbon emissions footprint of -5.1 kg CO2e (carbon negative).
