About the Artwork

Veins of Life expands on my ongoing interest in nature’s communication systems. This work visually presents an interconnected ecosystem beneath the soil where each point in the embroidery branches out into a single tree. The overall form references a seed, symbolising potential and growth, while the structure beneath suggests a hidden network of life. I have also incorporated a dried thistle, symbolising biodiversity and the ways nature protects itself.

“Veins of Life” consists of two parts. The first part is the main body of the work: an embroidered piece supported by a metal wire on its reverse side, allowing it to be suspended from nails placed along the wire (I usually put only three nails or screws).

The second part are the small ‘blue trees’ positioned above the embroidery. Each of these elements also carries a metal wire beneath it, enabling them to be hung individually using the same method. Visually, the ‘trees’ are arranged in rhythm with the embroidery’s repetitive lines, with each line crowned by a single tree.
