About the Artwork

Based on an emptied children's sticker sheet, Gone but not forgotten sifts through the remnants of value, memory and loss. The colourful borders trace where stickers once were, while the bare, unprimed canvas marks their absence. The work attempts to speak for the ghosts and leftovers that remain after extraction. Inviting viewers to consider remainders not as waste, but as couriers of frail memory, past function and quiet resistance. As with much of Smith's practice, this work examines the manner in which stories can persist in discarded or peripheral forms.
