About the Artwork

This painting explores emblematic imagery in connection with the planet Jupiter. It takes motifs from Greek and Roman mythology, and alchemy to create a swirling vortex of symbols and corresponding motifs to this planet. It decorates the central sphere with plants that correspond to the planet Jupiter in astro-herbology. It explores an enchanted perspective of the universe, that in the age of the Anthropocene, welcomes a sacred ecology perspective and an inspirited perception of nature. The central motif is a spiral, an important symbol in ancient sacred art forms, representing the cyclical patterns of change found throughout the natural world.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Hazel Florez (b. 1984) is a London-based artist and researcher with an MFA from Edinburgh. Her work has been exhibited internationally and is published with Taschen in The Library of Esoterica. She is also due to be published in a forthcoming book with Taschen called Mystical Beasts. Florez writes on art and art history for The World of Interiors magazine and was shortlisted for the London College of Psychic Studies annual art competition in 2022 and 2024. She is a Bridgeman Images Studio artist.
