About the Artwork
The Peace Flowers series pays homage to Helen Chadwick's Piss Flowers. Constructed through pouring casting material over piles of debris, the flowers collect shards and remnants, drawing fragmentary material into their skins. Shield-like they abruptly confront the viewer, revealing their fragile and brittle shell-like structures. The series explores plants which thrive in challenging conditions in their wild form. Gerbera Jamesonii grows abundantly on rocky slopes in its native South African Mpumalanga province.
