About the Artwork

This series reflects presentation turning into performance, celebrating emptiness as a site of consumption. Permanence dissolves into a transient flatness, where images promote yet evade. The sign boards frame a passerby’s gaze, offering just enough
substance across separately staged but animated scenes. Using a medium built for circulation and reach, the work forms a liminal space that redirects attention toward viewership itself. It probes the line between passive consumption and active participation, questioning how duration is used in contemporary media to blur audience and product.

Mathijs Hunfeld is a multidisciplinary artist and designer, currently working as Studio Manager at Thomas Bird Set Design Ltd, London.
Mathijs completed the art'otel residency at London Hoxton in 2026
Their work has been featured in various publications in 2025, including 'Behind the Closed Doors', FAD Magazine (Mark Westall). London; 'Directory 2025', Al-Tiba9, Barcelona; 'Crunch', Fresh Salad Zine, London.
Mathijs has exhibited in 2025 as part of 'Everything Then Is Now', Alter Peckham (London Design Festival); 'In Praise of Darkness', UCL Slade / ESPC OFF SITE, London & Hastings, UK; 'Personal Structures', European Cultural Centre, La Biennale Arte di Venezia, Venice, IT (in progress).
