About the Artwork

Celerena Mutala explores moths as vessels of storytelling, ecological memory, and transformation. It draws from the era of scientific illustration, and how documentation shapes our understanding of nature. Moths have appeared in world-building throughout art history, from Piero di Cosimo’s “Venus, Mars and Cupid,” to Van Gogh’s “Giant Peacock Moth”. The pinned moth is here both specimen and symbol. The glazed terracotta, vitrified and transmuted in the kiln, echoes metamorphosis as a cycle of renewal. Terracotta also recalls Greek and Etruscan vessels, some of which depict early narratives of queer histories.
