Bury my body was never just about a picnic. It’s about the dance of paint and light, the resistance to control, the attempt to keep something alive. The figures sit in an atmosphere thick with memory: the warmth of sun on skin, a subtle breeze, the hush of grass. Longing glances and the space between them. The painting holds onto a feeling a memory of how summer once felt. It’s not a scene, but a recollection built in layers. A search for emotion over precision. A moment remembered as its slipping away - fleeting and fractured.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Ella Shepard (b. 1993, Harrogate) is an artist who studied at Oxford Brookes University and received an MA in Painting from Arts University Bournemouth. She won the Young Bath Art Prize in 2018. She has been commissioned by and exhibited with Modern Art Oxford and The Arts Council. Her work is a permanent part of Oxford’s Public Art Collection. Her painting was recently selected by Tracey Emin for the Margate Art Prize shortlist.
