About the Artwork

This painting (Luna) came out of the physical act of creating a sculpture (second image), by cutting a hole through it. I was interested in myths surrounding the Cornish stone monument known as the 'Mèn-an-Tol', which was said to have healing abilities and powers of increased fertility, when people passed through the middle of the stone. Luna references an embodied portal - the moon is associated with femininity, cycles, a symbol of light and clarity. It was thought that if a woman passed through the holed stone seven times on a full moon she would be sure to fall pregnant.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Catriona Robertson (b. 1987) is a London-based British artist working in sculpture, installation, and performance. She holds an MA from the Royal College of Art and a BA from Central Saint Martins. She won the Cass Art Prize and the Boomer Prize in 2024. She was nominated as a ‘Women of the Year’ in 2023 and won a Studio Prize at SET Woolwich. Her monumental sculptures have been shown at the Saatchi Gallery.
