About the Artwork

This piece was carved from the surface of a discarded table. Although its legs were broken, the tabletop remained intact, and I wanted to give it a new life. The image came to me in a half-dream, half-awake state—originally, I tried to capture it in an oil painting, but it didn’t quite work. Later, I realized that carving the vision directly into the wood and adding color brought out its texture and emotional depth far more effectively. The work now feels like a quiet dialogue between memory, material, and transformation.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Xuemei Huang (b. 1984, China) is a London-based artist with an MFA in Fine Art from Goldsmiths, University of London. Before her art career, she worked for over 15 years at China Customs in Shenzhen. Her recent group exhibitions include Revelation at Hartslane Gallery (2024) and Taste the Difference Part 1 at Hypha Studios (2023). In 2022, she won the Tally Art Card Competition.
