About the Artwork

Second Skin examines the body as a site of control, transformation, and desire, shaped by pressures of self-idealisation and the social codes that enforce them. A sensuous yet synthetic latex form is stretched, pierced, and constrained within an unyielding steel frame. Its hourglass silhouette evokes tensions between submission and resistance, confronting the violence of internalised ideals. Alluding to historical mechanisms of bodily control used to discipline and eroticise, the work interrogates identity as  constructed through fetishisation, self-surveillance, and self-design. The sculpture invites viewers to kneel and pull its tension cables, participating in its deformation and release.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Chantelle Chong is a Singaporean-born spatial designer and MA Architecture student at the Royal College of Art. Working
across silicone, latex, and steel, she produces installations, drawings, films, and objects that examine self-surveillance and the soft boundaries of the body through a cyberfeminist lens. Treating the posthuman body as both structure and interface, her practice explores how identity is constructed through material and spatial systems. Her sculpture 'Second Skin' has been exhibited at BASE Milano during Milan Design Week 2025 and at the Saatchi Gallery through ArtEvol 2025.
