About the Artwork

My paintings and art practice were once described as being 'bombastically analogue'. By choosing to hand paint arrays of Casio watches is to render the digital through very analogue means. For me, the slow labour-intensive act of painting sits at the opposite end of the spectrum from the digital: which is linked with speed and efficiency.

The title itself further adds to the analogue: I was attempting to cycle from Belgium to Greece. Time was against me and my perspectives were deeply distorted by sleep deprivation and awful weather. Painted in a limited palette of oil over a pink underpainting, the blue pops off the canvas and makes the illuminated screens feel like lit swimming pools – a reference to a swimming pool shop I rested besides in the city of Namur in the early hours.
