About the Artwork

'A Severing of the Instinct' is a hand built sculpture with a hand drawn representation of seal skin across its surface. It uses the real-world heritage skills of modelling and drawing to create a work that can exist in a form that can confront a viewer.

The work is based on sculptural representations of the severed head of St John the Baptist. The drawing of seal skin fur across the face signifies that the head belongs to an "other than human" who has met a violent end and whose head is now displayed as a kind of trophy.
