About the Artwork

My paintings explore the unconscious dreams, desires and fantasies at play beneath the surface of our everyday lives. The images depict moments or scenarios of heightened significance or emotion. The work varies from scenarios where fantasy and reality combine, often focusing on dreamlike scenarios such as weddings, prom nights, first dates and the like. This painting is based on an image of a group of young women at a graduation ball from the 1980s. I’m interested in the ritualistic elements of these milestone moments, the dress, the materiality of the fabric, the ceremony of the event.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Emmet Kierans (b. 1981, Ireland) is a painter based in London. He holds a BFA from The Limerick School of Art and Design and an MFA from The Glasgow School of Art. He has exhibited widely in the UK, Ireland, and internationally, including at The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. His work is in the collections of The Arts Council of Ireland and Trinity College Dublin. His work has been featured in The Sunday Times Culture Section.
