About the Artwork
In Tommy Camerno's series of paintings titled Hatshepsut, architecture, sexuality and gender are questioned in relation to power and ritual in the ancient world. His earlier metal wall hangings became sculptures and were later used as stencils to create intricately ornate painted surfaces. The paintings, which combine various historical references, were produced over a long period of experimentation. In 2025 he undertook a research trip to Egypt to further understand the history of Hatshepsut, the New Kingdom female Pharaoh, who was represented as male in the later statues of her reign. Through a contemporary queer lens, historical fabulation and painterly abstraction Hatshepsut can be imagined as a gender non-conforming icon.
