About the Artwork

The painting "Her husband didn't die, he just became beautiful" explores memory, subconscious and metamorphosis. Inspired by 17th century Dutch still-life painting, it features deep tones of blue, green and purple against a near-black, blue backdrop, plant-like elements and fabrics. Painted in oil on canvas, with many layers of thinly applied paint, it mirrors the process of remembering and forgetting, when the layers of paint slowly diffuse what's visible and familiar until the original image is buried. What remains is a flickering impression on the surface, a light that seems to come from the underground.
