About the Artwork
Longhand extends my Penmate drawing series into three dimensions, translating a hand-drawn line into a field of hand-bent rods. Each rod shows the small changes that come from bending it by hand, revealing the work of the body rather than the precision of a machine. The fineness of the rods and the subtle colour applied to some create an optical instability, making the pattern drift in and out of focus as viewers move. This perceptual flicker resists fixed, singular readings and instead invites sustained attention, gentle recalibration and a slower, more nuanced way of looking.
