About the Artwork
My process rejects digital methods of working. While my paintings look precise, they reflect my human errors and thoughts. I relish slowness in the act of painting repeating
patterns, allowing me to enter a flow state during my painting process. My methods allow me to truly know my subject matter through exploring optical illusion by distorting geometric patterns through drawing and painting. I have a long-standing obsession with Op Art, and explore my ideas via a cube motif. Each work is constructed through careful planning - drawing out and mapping scaffolding lines around which to distort the pattern; and through spontaneity - learning new geometric rules and changing elements of the formula, such as light and colour. This draws the viewer away from the monotony of the
repeating pattern, and deliberately disrupts the harmony of the final composition. The painting reflects the analogue process to the onlooker, providing them with a viewing
experience that encourages them to question and decipher the methodology behind it. By exposing the viewer to the errors and oversights I make in my practice, I would like to allow people to realise the value in the pursuit of knowledge through active learning over passive computer generation.
