About the Artwork

A mechanical tapestry which when turning the handle represents a ball being kicked up and down (framing to be improved). This piece is part of my practice that focuses on day to day moments visually inspired by early cartoon aesthetics - such as the Beano - using tapestry and electronics or gears as the materials. Here as well is a little video of the piece moving: https://youtube.com/shorts/Y2uxWtAtZHA

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Patrick Stratton (b. 1994, Lewisham) merges weaving, mechanics, and electronics to document micro social systems. Inspired by Samuel Beckett, he uses a scientific-like approach to transform everyday actions into moving tapestries, often animated with motors. His work has been exhibited in the UK, USA, Italy, and Germany. The outcomes vary, with some pieces resulting in stable mechanical tapestries and others in short videos with archived pieces.
