About the Artwork

Babble, Gargle, Flow is a functional porcelain fountain exploring the Irish mourning tradition of keening—ritualized expressions of grief performed by women at wakes. Figures in various emotional states encircle a tiered, cauldron-like basin through which water, diluted with holy water, flows. Referencing the keeners’ roles as both mourners and caretakers, the work merges sound, movement, and sacred symbolism. The flowing water evokes the emotional realm, reintroducing physicality into ceramic practice. By combining ritual, sculpture, and sensory experience, the piece offers a contemporary meditation on collective grief, care, and the body’s role in mourning.
