About the Artwork

This portrait is from Green Dark, Bowes’ moonlight series taken in and around the Elan Valley, near Rhayader, Mid Wales. This upland area contains and sustains a unique and historic community, whose open hill farming practices, from tenanted farms, root them through their ancestors with continued belonging to the land. Moonlight offers a space — neither darkness nor light — to examine the people and the land, and the transition between them, in the discomfort of an uncertain climate future.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Zillah Bowes is a multi-disciplinary artist and filmmaker. She has won the British Journal International Photography Award, National Museum Wales Purchase Prize and Zealous: Amplify Environment. She was awarded the Future Wales Fellowship (2023-25) and commissioned for the Welsh Parliament. Her work is in collections including National Museum Wales and Welsh Parliament, and has been featured by The Guardian, Aesthetica Magazine, It’s Nice That, NOWNESS and BBC.
