About the Artwork

The Cloud of Unknowing was the title of a book written by an anonymous monk from a Carthusian order in the 14th century. The text explores how knowledge of the divine can be expressed through poetry and wonder, and the observation that the spiritual experience is beyond that which the rational mind can effectively describe. Sharing the same title, this painting is a playful take on this, and contains small hybrid creatures, referencing alchemy and ancient deities. This surreal painting has a gentle and lovingly humorous ambience, creating an enchanted Otherworld to explore the mystical mindset.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Hazel Florez (b. 1984) is a London-based artist and researcher with an MFA from Edinburgh. Her work has been exhibited internationally and is published with Taschen in The Library of Esoterica. She is also due to be published in a forthcoming book with Taschen called Mystical Beasts. Florez writes on art and art history for The World of Interiors magazine and was shortlisted for the London College of Psychic Studies annual art competition in 2022 and 2024. She is a Bridgeman Images Studio artist.
