About the Artwork

This is a reimagining of a lesser-known fairytale, the Princess and the Pea. First published by author Hans Christian Anderson in 1835, it is likely to have been inspired by traditional folklore. In the story, a princess unwittingly proves her royalty through showing extraordinary sensitivity of being unable to sleep comfortably on a stack of mattresses with a single pea hidden beneath. This modern interpretation shows a cosy figure at night, rather than a bruised insomniac. Perhaps the solution to being perceptive and insightful in a world built for toughness, is to create an environment where these qualities can thrive.
