About the Artwork

Part of an ongoing series modifying pre-existing, mass-produced ‘found’ images from books and publications or individual photographs or strangers. I overpaint to obscure the main subjects - crudely and blatantly, with a dash of humour and disrespect – creating odd and beguiling new compositions.
This activity of redacting considers what it means to remove, obscure and edit; in order to hide and conceal a reality, but also offer a space to fantasize new potential versions or truths. Doctoring has been going on since image-making began. These pieces do not hide the fact of an intervention, it becomes the subject.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Gary Winters (b. 1971) attended an Art Foundation in Southend-On-Sea before attaining a degree in Visual Performance from the experimental Dartington College of Arts, Devon. They received an Honorary Fellowship from the College in 2007 in recognition of the work made as one half of the cult live art performance duo Lone Twin. They won many Art Council funding awards and were supported by British Council.

Since 2022, the duo has been on hiatus, as Gary is pursuing a new body of work in the visual arts. Three publications refer to Gary's practice, plus press in various countries.
