About the Artwork

Painted using acrylic on linen, this work is part of a series that draws on photographs from my childhood, using the material reality of the past as a tool to better understand and look for healing in the present. In Feliz Día Mamá, I am dressed as a duck for a Mother’s Day performance in preschool. These works enable me to explore the intersections between the stresses of personal circumstances and the large-scale complexities of heritage and immigration.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Zully Mejía (b. 1997, Peru) is a Peruvian-American artist based in London. She holds a BFA from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and an MFA from Goldsmiths, University of London. Her work, which explores identity and memory, is held in public collections including the City of Las Vegas. In 2022, she had her first solo show in Europe. She was a contestant on Portrait Artist of the Year in 2024 and her painting America hangs in the U.S. Capitol Building.
