About the Artwork

Reflecting on the Mexican tradition of ‘Veladoras’ candles lit in memory of those who are passed or for a prayer. Drawing similarities between this tradition and the sense of loss felt when moving away from a native land. Depicting my great grandmother at her vanity. Figures are painted into the wall with the central figure seemingly unaware, her personal objects on her desk, veladora included.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Elizabeth Walker (b. 2003, Mexico) is a visual artist specializing in painting and printmaking. She holds a BA from Arts University Bournemouth and a PGCE with QTS from the University of Buckingham. Her work has been exhibited nationally across the UK, including at the Ulster Museum and the National Portrait Gallery. She has undertaken residencies with the Bournemouth Underground Gallery and Boom Studios. Her practice has been featured in Art It.
