About the Artwork

This painting is rooted in dreams to make an image of a fantastical, utopian landscape. Dream journaling over several months and walking formed key parts of the process. Layering paint and pigment, mark-making, erasure and manipulating line and scale of representational forms were part of this work’s process. To me, this is an image of transience, rest, wit and imagination. Notes from films - Man Ray’s Starfish and Sissako’s Waiting for Happiness, walks through old eastern cities and observation of everyday characters from life have formed some of the image. The stories of people, plants, land and politics are entwined.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Himani Gupta (b. 1985) is a London-based artist. She holds an MSc in Urban Planning from The Bartlett, UCL, and has completed programs at the Royal Drawing School and the TURPS offsite program. She was awarded an artist residency at Dumfries House in 2024. She has been part of several group exhibitions and collaborations, including a recent one with UCL x Wellcome Trust. Her work has been featured in publications and press.
