About the Artwork

A sliding door is built to regulate access: it opens, slides, and permits entry. Here it becomes a threshold between longing and fantasy, carrying the weight of disclosure. Yuming Lu repurposes a salvaged 2000s Volkswagen Transporter sliding door through a process of rigorous subtraction. By peeling away commercial vinyl, the artist excavates the word “Trade” (a term rooted in Polari, carrying the nostalgia of old-school queer code). What remains reads like a clipped promise, glimpsed on a late-night hookup profile page. The final “OOF” registers as visceral satisfaction, hovering at the edge of physical impact.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Yuming Lu (b. 1997, Shandong, China) is a London-based multidisciplinary artist. He completed an MA at Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London (2025). In 2026, he appeared in the BBC art reality show The Art Game, and is represented by Filthy Fox Auction. Selected exhibitions include Chez Moi at Gallery 46, London (2025) and Internet Cafe at Hypha Gallery 1 / No. 1 Poultry, London. He was nominated for the Nova Prize (2025). His moving-image work has also appeared on platforms including Harper’s BAZAAR.
