About the Artwork

The sculpture is part of a series where each object’s shape is created by dipping fabrics into a mix of natural beeswax, beef tallow, and lipsticks and then cast in materials such as brass, soap, or resin. While the series as a whole draws inspiration from the Cabinet of Curiosities, the objects' forms are reminiscent of classical sculpture drapes and the abstract shapes they assume when viewed independently from the human figure. The colors are reminiscent of tones present in make-up palettes. The work explores the presence of body in sculpture, and the boundaries between real and imaginative.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Anya Mokhova (b. 1987) is a contemporary London-based artist with an MA from Chelsea College of Arts. She has exhibited in London, Moscow, and at the Tbilisi Art Fair. She has been commissioned by brands like Lexus and Shiseido. Her press appearances include a printed interview in Elle Magazine and digital mentions in Vogue and Bazaar. She is currently working in her studio at The Koppel Projects.
