About the Artwork

This work comes from my series CABINET OF CURIOSITIES, based around the presentation of botanical specimens in illustrations by the likes of Ernst Haeckel. Rather than real forms however, these are biomorphic and suggestive fantasies generated by combining square, close-up photographs of randomly folded and pinned pieces of latex. Rather than digitally blend the images, slight misalignments, inconsistencies of focus etc are retained, inviting the eye of the viewer to do the blending instead. The series’ title refers to the historical collections of natural and ethnographic “curiosities” that were fashionable in the 17th to 19th centuries.

Work is a display transparency in a light-box which requires mains electrical supply (cable and UK plug are fitted). The box is 11.5cm deep and can be secured to a wall using the supplied the mirror plates, alternatively is can be left to stand on a shelf. The current light-box which houses the work was used in a recent exhibition and is grey painted MDF, however I can arrange for a higher quality hardwood box to replace it for an additional cost of £120.
