About the Artwork

Untitled (biofouling I & II) are made from ‘waste’ oyster shells collected from Angela’s, a seafood restaurant in Margate. Over the run of the exhibition Untitled (biofouling I & II) will gradually degrade and sweat as it soaks up water from the trays it sits in and from the humidity of the closed environment of the display case*. The word ‘biofouling’ refers to an accumulation of sea creatures and organisms that build their habitats on human-made structures causing a ‘nuisance’ to humans/industry. The work questions destruction of ocean habitats and the longevity of sculptural materials in the current climate crisis.

* Please note when not soaked in water the material is stable and will not degrade when kept in the correct environment for artworks. The works will be remade for sale to ensure longevity, this also means there may be a slight difference in the sculptures to the original artwork shown in the images. Please be aware that this process takes at least 3-4 weeks to complete.
