About the Artwork

This is a surreal painting set in an imaginary landscape with a fantastical creature sitting on a rock. A frozen terrain and biomorphic shapes frame the composition. Five discs in the sky reference the five of pentacles in the tarot, a card that is associated with coldness and being in need. The central figure clasps a small object reminiscent of a smartphone. Using mystical symbolism and the visual poetry of a fabricated Otherworld, Florez makes a comment about the digital addiction in the contemporary age, through a dreamlike conjuring of this modern reverie.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Hazel Florez (b. 1984) is a London-based artist and researcher with an MFA from Edinburgh. Her work has been exhibited internationally and is published with Taschen in The Library of Esoterica. She is also due to be published in a forthcoming book with Taschen on 'Mystical Beasts'. Florez writes on art and art history for The World of Interiors magazine and was shortlisted for the London College of Psychic Studies annual art competition in 2022 and 2024. She is a Bridgeman Images Studio artist.
