About the Artwork

My practice investigates how aerial perspectives have shaped our perception of landscape, incorporating marquetry techniques to examine scale, flatness, remoteness and abstraction. Through these processes my work shifts the pictorial plane away from a knowable landscape towards a vague terrain that re-frames our relationship to the land. I draw links between abstraction and the weaponisation of landscape through the invention of aerial imaging for surveillance and reconnaissance purposes. I’m interested in the archival function of satellite imaging; its role in recording and revealing traces of human interventions preserved in the land such as agricultural patchworks, cityscapes, transport networks and earthworks.
