About the Artwork
‘Holding space’ reflects the experience of the city. The difference between pictorial and sculptural space fascinated me. With pictorial experience, the viewer patrols the space. Sculptural experience performs differently. Structures invade space, and space patrols the viewers’ engagement. Despite its sculptural presence, it also functions pictorially. The repetition of colour and surface aid experience, whilst spatial interventions engage. Navigating the piece is like walking through the city. I was interested in the rhythm of observation required to reveal and unravel. ‘Holding space’ proposes an encounter where the viewer is not the protagonist but on par with place, subject, and city.
