Tenderness

Alabaster, found wood, alabaster plaster, steel

About the Artwork

Tenderness turns toward the viewer, bringing rough stone crevices into dialogue with smooth, haptic curves. A plaster plinth cast from the dust of carving is poured directly onto found wood bearing traces of an earlier break. Through its materials, surfaces, and structure, the work reflects a persistent drive toward repair, where traces of damage become evidence of adaptation, endurance, and renewal.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Mary Norowzian (b.1958) is an emerging artist whose abstract sculptures explore memory, trauma, and healing. Stone, shaped through compression and time is a metaphor for lived experience including damage and repair. Through direct carving, she engages in a meditative dialogue with material, technique, and emotion, creating haptic forms. Following a career in counselling and mental health, she established her studio practice in 2019, gaining a First Class BA (Hons) at West Dean College of Arts (2025). Exhibition highlights include the GraduateArt Show Global at Vanner Gallery (2025), London Craft Week (2025), and South Downs Open (2024).
