About the Artwork

The paintings in Miguel’s ongoing Dénia series are based on the sights, textures & sensory input of the town in Eastern Spain where Miguel spent many Summer months with his family as a child & adolescent. The series is based entirely on physical &
emotional memory rather than any actual imagery or physical mementos. Technically, the initial ideas for the series developed into an abstract, strongly geometric language executed with heavy oil impasto mixed with marble dust & applied with a palette knife to create rough, unique textures which are a trademark of Miguel’s work.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Miguel Sopena (b. 1971, Valencia, Spain) became an artist in the UK after completing a part-time Fine Art Foundation BTEC and a 2-year figurative painting diploma. Miguel has built a track record of exhibiting & promoting his work, including his solo show at the Stone Space in East London in December 2022 (supported by an Arts Council England project grant) by participating in The Other Art Fair London in October 2025 and March 2026 and the Landmark Art Fair in London in October 2025. Miguel's work has been reviewed in publications such as Flux Magazine & Art Horizons.
