About the Artwork

Untitled (Daiki) assembles an anonymous young man from multiple sample ID photographs commonly used for job applications in Japan. Printed onto individual A4 canvas sheets using a domestic printer, stitched together and partially painted, the image never resolves into a single identity, instead becoming a composite shaped by repetition and conformity.
An LED strip housed within a fluorescent light fitting references the harsh lighting of offices and bureaucratic spaces. Named after one of Japan's most popular boys' names in 2003, Daiki reflects on the pressures of employability and socia expectation facing a generation entering the workforce.

The canvas is installed directly onto the wall using nails with beads placed through the metal eyelets. There are 19 eyelets
positioned along the top and sides of the work, with no fixings required along the bottom edge.
A fluorescent light fitting containing an LED strip is placed on the floor approximately 80 cm from the wall, which is adjustable to suit the space. The LED is powered via a cable and requires access to a standard electrical outlet. The light can be turned on and off by a remote control.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Marine One (b. 1997, Tokyo) is an artist with an MA from Central Saint Martins and a BA from Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera, Milan. Her group exhibitions include The Bomb Factory window exhibition and Pickled! at APT Gallery in London in 2025. She has also exhibited in various Hypha Studios shows, including Nectar and Melt, and in Milan.
