About the Artwork
Photographer/Artwork image credit: Damian Griffiths Studio
'Camerae' explores the human connection to nature through the lens of evolutionary history. It brings together nature, deep time, ecology, and queer culture, and asks what the 'natural order' means when humans share the same origins as all other life on earth. Seen in this way, nature becomes strange and wondrous, like the ammonites and Cambrian creatures that inspired the work. The figure's clothing is based on Mary Anning, whose fossil discoveries as a young girl helped reveal deep time and changed how we understand the natural world.
