About the Artwork

This mixed media work, made with fabric, acrylic paint, and beads, explores the tension between masculine and feminine representation. The male figure, collaged from various found images, takes a pose inspired by pin up girls often seen on the covers of Japanese boys’ manga magazines. The background screen references a typical layout used in online advertisements for escort services in Japan. By placing a traditionally masculine body in a feminized pose, the piece questions how gender, beauty, and desire are stylized, staged, and culturally coded.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Marine One (b. 1997, Tokyo) is an artist with an MA from Central Saint Martins and a BA from Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera, Milan. Her group exhibitions include The Bomb Factory window exhibition and Pickled! at APT Gallery in London in 2025. She has also exhibited in various Hypha Studios shows, including Nectar and Melt, and in Milan.
