About the Artwork
Time based video of blood cells obtained from nutritionist microscope. Neutrophils are a type of white blood cell that helps the body fight infection. The artist’s blood is being used for this work as a way to understand the workings of the immune system, and how it looks when fighting infection. By abstracting the footage, the work focuses on these unseen internal processes of the body. Reflecting on vulnerability, identity, and bodily autonomy. A semi-autobiographical work bringing the viewer even closer to the artist but at a distance. Looking at spaces within the body and bringing them to the public space.
This clip was filmed at a nutritionist’s office which the artist used to frequent as a young child with her mother. With the intention to remedy symptoms of fatigue through holistic healing and naturopathic remedies. As an adult looking back at these experiences through the lens of consent, illness and psychoanalysis, Cardozo extrapolates these micro sequences and converts them into a macro installation for the viewer to see. Conjuring feelings of nostalgia, uncanniness and curiosity.
