About the Artwork

The Mist is a series inspired by the emptiness and spatial rhythms of traditional Chinese literati painting from the Song and Yuan dynasties. Through these works, I explore how the sensibility of traditional Chinese painting can be carried into a contemporary context. In The Mist, female bodies entangled in rusty mists, their forms emerge from and dissolve into the surrounding colours, blurring the boundaries between body and landscape, creating a tension between presence and absence, intimacy and distance.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Rainy Tong (Qiuxiang Liu) is a London-based Chinese painter. She graduated in Painting(MA) in Royal College of Art. Rainy presented solo exhibitions at RuptureXIBIT in London in 2025 and participated in group exhibitions including Saatchi Gallery, Silian Gallery, Espacio Gallery Space, Safe House, among others. Her performance work Ghost Touch and poetry piece Eat the Moment were published in the book I Am Human and presented at the ICA Book Fair by Wild Parlour in 2025.
