About the Artwork
Layered notions of domesticity underpin Samms’ work. This piece is part of a series entitled, ‘Leftovers,’ where Samms merges discordant elements: heavy, patinated steel offset by intricate weavings of upcycled silks, leather offcuts, hair. Working with synchronicities and accidents, nothing is discarded. Consequently, perceived ‘failures’ of artistic process – breakages in the kiln, unintentional rips – are reimagined as deconstructions of traditional forms. Samms weaves the textile elements of her works, bringing together ‘leftovers’, debris of the home, creating something new. This body of work asks: what do we amass around ourselves to make a home feel secure?
