About the Artwork
The 11th Station of the Cross is part of Cheo Gonzalez’s Street Cathedral project. Conceived in response to the Stations of the Cross tradition, it reimagines the Passion and the body of Christ to challenge the race and masculinity embedded in Christian art, shaping dominant representations of God. The work begins with images of queer models pasted onto street walls. Altered by weather, time, and passers-by, the surviving fragments are rescued and reconstructed on the reverse of fly-posters removed from city walls, before Gonzalez adds a delicate gold-leaf halo and returns them to the street or art spaces.
