About the Artwork

The Wave Painting series is the closest my work gets to hard-edged abstraction, a style I rarely adopt. However, they fit within my varied output by being far removed from the source material - something I always do to make work 'mine' rather than belonging to the subject. No matter the time of day, a sea will invariably appear monochrome, and the fluid motion of the water is the opposite of the hard-edged, linear marks that populate the paintings. I try and make these paintings joyous, spontaneous, made in one long painting session with no adjustments later.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Lee Johnson (b. 1975) is an artist who received his MA from Central Saint Martins in 2001. His work is held in collections including Soho House and the Tate Britain. He was selected for the John Moores Painting Prize (2010) and the Contemporary British Painting Prize (2023), and won the inaugural Lido Stores Open in 2021. He has exhibited in public institutions like the Walker Art Gallery and in private galleries in London and Australia. His work has appeared in Vogue and Elle Decoration.
