About the Artwork

Held Taut shows a figure caught in tension, wrapped in white lines that feel both restraining and electric. These marks don’t just bind; they seem to pulse, to glow, to touch something deeper. It’s hard to say where the pressure comes from — whether it’s internal, remembered, or forced upon the body from elsewhere. Nothing here is neutral. The surface is charged. What holds this figure isn’t peace or wellness, but a live current — emotional, political, intimate. Something flickers just beneath the skin. A body on edge, lit by its own resistance.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Michalis Karaiskos (b. 1979, Cyprus) is a visual artist of Cypriot and Greek-Egyptian heritage based in London. He holds an MFA from Goldsmiths, University of London, and an Integrated Master’s from the Athens School of Fine Arts. He has exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts (London) and the Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre (Latvia). He won the James H. Pinto Painting Prize (2022) and the K-Droz Art Prize (2020). He will attend the Helene Wurlitzer Foundation Residency in 2026. His work has been featured in publications like MEANS Magazine.
